How Do I Hold a Pistol Steadier?

You cannot eliminate all pistol movement, and trying to do so can make your hold worse. Improve stability through repeatable stance, natural alignment, appropriate muscle tension and a hold duration you can sustain. More importantly, learn to execute the trigger while the sights move normally. Elite shooting is not the absence of movement. It is effective execution despite movement.

Change the objective

Do not train "make the sights stop". Train "execute consistently inside my normal movement". This is an important distinction, and it changes what a good training session looks like.

What actually improves stability

  • A stance you can rebuild identically, shot after shot.
  • Natural point of aim, so you are not holding against your own body.
  • Muscle tension appropriate to the task rather than maximal.
  • A hold duration you can sustain without deterioration.
