What Causes a Vertical Shot Group?

A vertically elongated group means vertical variation is greater than horizontal variation, but the target alone does not identify the cause. Possible contributors include sight-alignment variation, changing hold, trigger interaction, fatigue or differences in execution timing. First confirm that the vertical pattern repeats across multiple groups before treating it as meaningful.

What to check first

  • Does the vertical shape repeat, or was it one group?
  • Does vertical spread increase later in the session?
  • Does your hold duration vary between shots?
  • Do your shot calls agree with the high and low shots?

A useful test

Shoot one group with your usual hold time and one with a deliberately shorter hold, changing nothing else. If vertical spread reduces noticeably with the shorter hold, hold duration is a hypothesis worth pursuing — not yet a conclusion.

ShootMind principle

One shot is an event. One target is a clue. A repeated pattern is evidence.
