Breathe normally while building the position, then let the shot happen in a natural pause after a relaxed exhale — not while forcibly holding a full breath. The pause is short: for most shooters the steadiest window is a few seconds, and vision starts to degrade well before you feel short of air. If the shot does not break within that window, breathe again and restart. Breathing is not a separate skill; it sets the timing of everything else in the shot.

Why the pause works

Breathing moves the chest, the shoulders and therefore the rifle. A relaxed pause after exhaling gives a short window where the position is at its most settled and the muscles are not working against the ribcage.

Holding a full breath does the opposite: it raises tension, pushes the position and shortens the useful window.

A workable rhythm

  • Two or three calm breaths while settling into position.
  • A slightly deeper breath, then exhale about two thirds.
  • Let the pause happen. Do not clamp it shut.
  • Release the shot inside your normal hold time.
  • Follow through, then breathe and reset.

How breathing shows up on the target

Breathing errors usually appear as vertical dispersion, because chest movement mainly moves the muzzle up and down. Shots that leave high or low with a sight picture that felt acceptable are worth investigating here before blaming the trigger.

Between shots and between series

Breathing also regulates arousal. A slow exhale that is longer than the inhale — roughly four seconds in and six to eight out — is a practical way to bring tension down between series without losing focus.

Qué no cambiar todavía

  • Do not extend the pause to buy time for a shot that is not coming.
  • Do not adopt someone else's breathing count if it leaves you short of air.

Principio de ShootMind

Breathing sets the clock for the shot. When the clock runs out, start again.

Preguntas frecuentes
