Natural point of aim is where your rifle points when your position is relaxed and you are not steering with muscle. To find it, build your position, aim, close your eyes, breathe out normally and relax for a few seconds, then open your eyes. Wherever the sights are now is your natural point of aim. Correct the difference by moving your feet or rotating your whole position — never by pushing the rifle back onto the target with your arms. A position that has to be held on target will drift back off during the shot.
Why it matters more for rifle than most shooters expect
A rifle position is heavy and slow. Small muscular corrections are easy to make and easy not to notice, and they release exactly when you stop concentrating on them — usually during the trigger press and follow-through.
That is why a shooter can hold a perfect sight picture and still see the shot leave in a consistent direction.
The test, step by step
- Build your position as you normally would and settle.
- Aim at the target and take a normal breathing cycle.
- Close your eyes and relax for three to five seconds.
- Open your eyes without adjusting anything.
- Note where the sights sit relative to the aiming mark.
- Correct horizontally by moving the rear foot; correct vertically with hip position, stance width or butt plate height.
- Repeat until the sights return to the aiming mark by themselves.
Cómo se ve en el blanco
A natural point of aim that sits off to one side often produces a group displaced in that direction, with shots that feel well executed. If the position is fighting vertically, vertical dispersion is more common. Neither is proof on its own — check the position before touching the sights.
Adjusting the sights to compensate for a wrong natural point of aim hides the problem. The group moves onto the middle, and the inconsistency stays.
Qué no cambiar todavía
- Do not correct natural point of aim with your arms or shoulders.
- Do not adjust the sights until the position points where you want it.

Preguntas frecuentes
