Why Am I Shooting Low Left?
Low-left groups are one of the most common complaints from right-handed pistol shooters — and one of the most misdiagnosed. The classic wall chart says "jerking the trigger", but the same position on the target can come from grip, timing, vision, anticipation or simply a sight setting.
The target shows where the shots went. It does not show why. The useful work is narrowing down the cause with a couple of simple tests.
Before changing technique, check that it is really a pattern and not normal dispersion, and that your zero is correct. Then test one cause at a time: trigger interaction, grip pressure changes, anticipation, and where your eyes are focused.
First, is it a pattern or normal dispersion?
Five shots is a small sample. A group that sits low left on one target may sit centrally on the next. Look at three or four targets from different sessions before concluding anything.
Also rule out the boring explanation: a sight setting that is simply off. If the group is tight but consistently displaced, that is a zero question, not a technique question.
Trigger interaction and timing
Pressure applied sideways, or a press that accelerates at the end, pushes the muzzle off line just as the shot leaves. It often shows up as shots that go low left for a right-handed shooter and low right for a left-handed one.
Grip and changes in pressure
Squeezing harder with the whole hand while pressing the trigger — sometimes called milking — moves the sights in a repeatable direction. Tired hands late in a session do the same thing.
Anticipation, movement and execution
Anticipating recoil makes the shooter push into the shot before it happens. This is one of the few causes that dry fire exposes immediately: if the sights dip on an empty chamber, you have found it.
Sight picture and visual focus
Shifting focus to the target just before the shot lets alignment drift unnoticed. In poor or changing light the same drift becomes larger, which is why the same shooter can be centred indoors and low left outdoors.
How to test what is actually happening
Use tests that isolate one variable: dry fire for anticipation, a ball-and-dummy drill for trigger interaction, and a slow-fire series with shot calling for vision and timing. Change one thing, then compare targets across two or three sessions.
- Dry fire five shots and watch the sights at the break — do they dip?
- Have someone load randomly with a dummy round and watch what the pistol does.
- Shoot one slow series calling every shot, then compare calls with the target.

Does low left always mean I am jerking the trigger?

Should I adjust my sights to compensate?
