Why Are My Rifle Shots Horizontal?
Sideways spread with a rifle is nearly always a position story. The rifle is being steered instead of being pointed, and the steering is not identical from shot to shot.
Check natural point of aim first — if the rifle has to be held onto the target, shots scatter sideways. Then look for balance drifting through the series, and for the trigger hand pulling the stock as pressure builds.
Natural point of aim
The eyes-closed test answers this in ten seconds. If the sights open up left or right of centre, everything after that is muscle work — and muscle work varies.
Balance drift
Weight slowly moving onto one foot rotates the whole position. Shots that walk steadily in one direction through a series are the signature.
Trigger hand pressure
A grip that tightens during the press twists the rifle. Scattered shots that spread both ways with no time pattern often come from here.
And the range itself
Outdoors, wind and light have to be ruled out before technique is blamed. Indoors at 10 m they rarely explain more than a fraction of a ring.
- Run the eyes-closed test before every series for one session.
- Note which foot your weight ends up on after ten shots.
- Dry fire five shots watching the trigger hand only.
A shot pattern rarely has one single cause. ShootMind.com combines what your target shows with your training context and your own notes before suggesting anything.
Common questions
My group is displaced but tight — is that the same problem?
No. A tight group in the wrong place is a sight-setting question. A wide group is a technique question. Fix the width first.
Can the jacket cause sideways spread?
Yes, if it is done up differently between series. Fasten it the same way every time and note it in your log.
